[Runequest] Spirit Combat keeping it interesting and not just a character equipment stage

For me this does bring up the question
What do people do to make or keep spirit conflict interesting?

Ever had a character possessed by one of those magic point repositories 
;-) 

I have always liked the idea of giving a form of STR bonus based on POW 
in spirit conflict.
but couldnt think of a good... way to prevent excessive benefit from POW
its the offense its the defense its everything to spirit conflict.... 
maybe if your game has SAN
for the mental health and balance and use INT for targetting like effect.
No I dont really want to diverge from the resistance tables elegance too 
far.
