If he's maybe talking about the commercial success of the rules systems, it might be fair to say that the rules that eventually became Basic Role Playing owed a debt of gratitude to the commercial success of the Call of Cthulhu game, which is obviously Lovecrafty. But that's significantly different from RuneQuest.
I think the assertion is simply false on its face.
