It sounds like they may have been missing fats and a few other essentials
from their diets. A person can eat large amounts of rabbit and still end up
starving because of the missing fat. Best way to deal with that is to crack
open the bones or boil them to get the fatty marrow out, as well as the
calcium. And eating the eyes and brains would help a bit as well.
