[Runequest] Shield skill penalty query

Yes, it's true; not only does the defender have high ground and the correct
siding but they were able to brace more easily against the stairs above
them, but speaking of shields the defender could still be leading the charge
with one easily in place. From a rules stand point I'd probably stick with
the +10%/-10% rules for height advantage (plus modifiers for tight
quarters), but require more frequent DEX rolls by the attacker (coming up
the stairs) and more emphasis on knockback and it's unfortunate
consequences.  =)

Cheers,
Bert

Subject: [Runequest] Shield skill penalty query

Greetings, Comrades,
A question regarding shields in castles. I have often been told that,
in the later medieval castles, the stairs circled clockwise so as to
put the invader (i.e., the fellow fighting his way upstairs) at a
disadvantage. The idea being that, assuming the attacker to be
right-handed, it would be difficult for him to make effective use of
his shield.
Is this story true? And, if so, what penalty should it be in RQ3?
   Feedback is warmly welcome.
   Sincerely,
Asher
