This is a bit of the top of head and muddled so please edit as you read.
I cut my teeth on Dragon Warriors and thence Stormbringer where the resistance roll were both using fixed values. (Magical Attack vs Magical Defence in DW and Pow v Pow in SB)
I never liked the Magic Point vs Magic Point in RQ and have neve used it when RUNNING (when playing I have to wind my neck in and do as GM says of course)
Could one:
Use Pow vs. Pow but have the option of burning Magic Points to augment Pow for that contest.
So if I really need to Palsy the Giant I can burn 10 MP to add 50%iles to my chance of success.
And likewise if I really do not want to have my Spirit Severed (and who does?) burn 10MP to resist the grinning maniacal Humakti Drake.
Taking a leaf from Shadowrun I could burn my MPs to add to the resistance chance of all of my chums (maybe only those within my Luckm of me?)
Taking a further leaf from DW Physically attacking spells (Disrupt, Lightning, Thunderbolt, et al that Dw calls indirect-attack spells) the catser makes a DEX vs DEX resistance roll. With the option of boosting with extra MP to make the attack faster and harder to dodge.
