[Runequest] POW or MP?

A group I have played with uses MP vs MP, but if the situation is really
dire, the player can chose to use their POW score to either resist a spell,
or to try and overcome their spell's target. The downside is that this
results in the loss of 1 point of POW.

The idea is that POW is the real measure of your soul and its magical
ability. As you do things like cast spells, you use MP, sort of like
fatigue for the soul. In a desperate situation you can draw upon your inner
power, sort of a heroic action, but this costs you dearly.

It may just be the group I play with, but it has only been used a few times,
and as intended, always in appropriate situations

My old group had a system in which you could burn off permanent points of
POW in order to supercharge one of your spells or make damned sure that it
blew through any countermagic.

It was rarely used, and only in extreme emergencies.

I can't help but think this would be really problematic as soon as
people start acquiring Power Spirits or their equvielent.
