From lev at rpgreview.net Sat Feb 21 23:16:24 2009 From: lev at rpgreview.net (Lev Lafayette) Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 10:16:24 +1100 Subject: [Questworld] Monkey business Message-ID: <1235258184.6060.0.camel@squirrel> Hello everyone, Welcome to the SPQR-Questworld game. I have designed a very basic webpage which explains what SPQR and Questworld. It can be found at the following URL http://rpgreview.net/node/21 Despite my best efforts I can found ONE map on the web of the island continent of Kanos which was the only part of Questworld ever developed (with, perhaps, the exception of Griffin Island). http://talmeta.net/maps/kanos.htm (Which means I'm going to have to do some scanning) There is some reference to the background here: http://www.indie-rpgs.com/forum/index.php?topic=21477.0;wap2 The only part of Questworld that was ever developed was the north-east corner of Kanos, a region known as Greenwald. It's a tropical region, with high temperatures and high rainfall. The ocean is to the east, there is a high mountain range to the west. You will start some distance inland at a village on the southern region of the Oligarchy of Kerzen. You may either locals or travellers to the town, as you choose. The local farmers have banded together to raise a massive sum of 1,000 silvers to any who will rid them of a plague of monkeys that have been threatening their crops and livelihood. Normally, it is just a few items of fruit which is annoying enough. But recently the monkeys have been arriving with gorillas was well which are truly dangerous. Not only have they been taking fruit, but they have also been taking livestock and farm stocks of cassava and sago, which is not normal behaviour at all! The farmers believe that the monkeys and gorillas are being organised by intelligent chimpanzees. The chimps are known to be the high priests of the monkey god, the intellectual elite of the ape world. Some have been spotted bearing weapons. "Will you help us?", asks a village elder as you sit around a table in the communual hall. "We do not know how long our village can survive with these troubles, and it will be weeks before the lords organise a force. (This is an opportunity to introduce your characters and discuss the Elder's offer - and ask any questions about the setting) A note on play. There are eseentially two ways of conducting a PBeM. One is a longer narrative form where the GM describes a whole scene and the PCs react to that scene. That's how I normally play. Or, alternatively, each action is narrated in a couple of sentences with player responses. It requires a greater turnover of activity, but shorter input (a couple of sentences from each player every couple of days). I shall try this method for SPQR-Questworld.
