Subject: [Nyarlathotep] Shanghai, July 1925

The Investigators literally take a slow boat to Shanghai via Singapore and
Hong Kong with the tentative clues of an old photograph, a sighting, and a
matchbox - and a mark on the map in temple of the Black Pharoah. The air
is hot and humid with occasional downpours and thunderstorms. The locals
speak of the possibility of typhoons.

Booking into the Cathay Hotel on the Whangpoo River, they are comfortably
located in The Bund, a protected European "concession". The British,
French, Americans, and even Japanese have such concessions in which no
Chinese law applies. Citizens of these treaty powers cannot be tried under
Chinese law, whether or not they are in the concession areas.

The Investigators have visited The Stumbling Tiger Bar, where they met
Fergus Chum, the owner of this dive. Proving to deeply inscrutible, the
only item of note was the passing of sums of money between the clients.
When this information is further investigated by Stefan St. John, it is
discovered that The Stumbling Tiger Bar is a "puzzle bar" - a please where
circumspect questions may be asked and, with the payment of money,
information may be obtained.

Visits to the quartermaster on the wharf reveals that the boat in the
photo belongs to the Dark Mistress, a slim 90 ft yacht that visits Ho
Fong's warehouse every few days in the evening. Ho Fong is a wealthy and
powerful individual, who is perfect in all respects, even in his
imperfections (he cheats a little on his taxes). The international trading
items of Ho Fong include tea, porcelains, rice, dried herbs, salted fish,
cordage, machine parts, hard woods - pretty much everything. Please note
he does not have a "shopfront" - my mistake.

Tomorrow night's episode will begin with the information received from a
visit to The Shanhai Courier, "the newspaper morgue" as it's been put.

It may be quite an interesting session now that the party ...

a) Has a contact with the Japanese military, Isoge Taro, and learned that
the New China paramilitary group is making a secret weapon.
b) Met Fergus McChum, who said there was a cult The Order of the Bloated
Woman, associated with similar cults around the world.
c) Discovered the existence of a fanatical group, New China who are
carrying out assassinations against corrupt officials and may be building
a bomb on Gray Dragon Isle.
e) Met the insane drug-addicted self-style mandarin, Lin Tang Yu.
f) Discovered that Ho Fong is the head of the Cult of the Bloated Woman
and that they operate from Gray Dragon Isle
g) Made association with Lee Wen-Cheng, a very clean-cut young librarian
who acts as guide and translator.
h) Met Jack Brady and heard his *amazing* story.
i) Discovered that Roger Carlyle is still alive, albeit in a sanitorium
j) Discovered the scrolls alert to a a ward that can protect from great

Stephen St George has received a message at the hotel. The concierge says
it was dropped off by an American man who wouldn't give his name ("just
tell it it's form a friend"). The fact that it's written on the back of
notepaper of the Shanghai American School
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_American_School) seems to suggest
this.

The message says that a coup is being organised in Egypt. The coup
supporters wish to remove Prime Minister Ahmad Ziwar Pasha and replace him
with the nationalist Saad Zaghloul. Zaghloul, a popular and capable
administrator, was prime minister prior to Pasha, but after the
assassination of the governor of Sudan, Sir Lee Stack, the British made
demands which led to Zaghloul resigning rather than carrying them out.

There is concern that Zaghloul, although a nationalist who is seeking to
eventually remove British control and influence, is accepting this coup,
as in the past he has been a steadfast supporter of a constitutional
democracy and gradual reform and has curtailed the more radical
nationalists.

It is believed that Omar Shakti is providing funding, support, and
training, behind this coup.

(Omar Shakti, you will recall, is the powerful cotton farmer whose estate
had the magical locks and who you saw at the at the Sphinx ritual etc.
Unbeknownest to the party it is also where M'moud and Father Delacroix
ended up.)

The letter gives no other indication of the author, but is signed "Z".
