Small single or double masted vessels like this actually represented the most common form of pirate; only the most successful pirates had larger vessels and few pirate ships were over 200 tons. The Fiery Dragon, ironically destroyed by fire in 1721, was typical. To threaten larger merchant vessels the sloop relies on speed, superior numbers in boarding, and intimidation. 150 tons, 52' Colossal.
