What worked really well back home was each person trying to GM an adventure. That way the GM experience gets shared, people can give it a go and everyone has a chance to play.
Also led to some very weird adventures from people who had ideas but weren't limited to the world/system: kung fu inter galatic takeaway battles.
 
We were playing D&D...
...
 
Odd but great fun! :)
