You want any further or clarification I am happy to provide :) Parents both mercenaries, saved money and bought a small inn on a good trade route. Born about 26 years ago near the start of the war. Large family, no real useful duties for him at the inn Especially considering size and appetite Didn't qualify for the more prestigious academies, but the Drexel one was happy to take someone of his size on. Entered at 16, did well. Turnover in the PC companies Doppel soldier unit was quite high so he rose fairly quickly once recruited. Especially with his loyalty hubris. Used to send extra money home. As he rose through NCO ranks he got the nickname 'Mother Bear' for his combination of ferocity and care. Usually out of earshot. Became Sergeant not that long ago. His family tried to stay neutral with religion, but were slightly objectivist. His crises of faith was going home to find the inn burned down, family hung with the sign "Heretic" around their necks. No idea which side did it. Keeps his red hair and beard close trimmed, but has a large trimmed walrus mustache he is very proud of, and strokes as a habit. His Zweilander was his mother's and again his is proud of it and carefully maintains it as another habit. Likes to dress in his fancy Solden clothes, but is always careful to display Swordsman's Guild pin. As he is punctilious about his duty. Swordsman's guild income is separate, but company did come first until dissolution. Very big on protecting 'his' people and the innocent. Was harsh with his men who looted or attacked civilians. Tends to be blunt, but a little nervous around the upper class. Not too good on courtly manners. His extra money goes to the windows, orphans and unemployed ex company members around Freiburg. Has been sneaking off to do so, which folks may notice. Practices fighting daily, wants to learn to read to study more strategy. Goal in life is to save enough for a small farm where he can restore the land, and raise a family. -- Lev Lafayette, BA (Hons), GradCertTerAdEd (Murdoch), GradCertPM, MBA (Tech Mngmnt) (Chifley) mobile: 0432 255 208 RFC 1855 Netiquette Guidelines http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt http://www.quicksales.com.au/shop/RPG-Review.aspx -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... With the War of the Cross between the Objectionists and the loyalists to the Vaticine Church concluded, a disparate group found themselves together, but with a common bond. The religious and civil war provided many opportunities , and George Byron, ever in search for money for his sensual and decadant lifestyle, found much to be gained in investing in a mercenary Kompanie. Common members of one the three Zugtrupp that made up the Kompanie included Doctor Serjio, a Castillian physician, herbalist, and tenured professor, but also known for his "contempible theories", as various religious scholars have put it; Alice Lidelle, a young lass from Montaigne, who is beautiful as well as deadly, and terribly unlucky in romance. Then there is Alex Maxilmillan, a large man, a professional soldier, Offiziere of the Zuge, but also one who once was firm in his faith but has had it shaken by the experience of war. Also occasionally tagging along was the strange Wagner of the Vesten who was both haunted and carried a sorcerous runic blade. It was in one of the last battles of the War of the Cross that this disparate group managed to save their Kompanie commanders, Erhard Haeur, from capture. He was mortally wounded from the fray, but at least he was not in the hands of the enemy and put under torture. As he died he gave a letter to the group, which turned out to be no less than an old manor house in the riverside of the famous city of Freiburg. On arrival to their massive new home, they were met by the elderly groundskeeper, Armin Fauser, who explained the long history of the house, one of the original's in the area, along with the passing of the title in recent years and that one of their name must take up the noble title. It was passed to Alice, who became Lady Alice Drachenheim. But that was not all; Freiburg is a free city for better or for worse. Baron Trague has taken laissez-faire to dangerous extremes, and locals were being relieved of their monies to "ensure their protection", by a local group who called themselves the Mad Wolves. When a pack of these ruffians came demaning their fee they were confronted by two experienced warriors who made very short work of them, killing their leader, and causing the others to flee. This would be the beginning of trouble. Word of them chasing off the Mad Wolves spreads througout the neighbourhood, and they were visited by one middle-aged merchant, Alberto Constanza, expressing hope that the party would perhaps offer their services to replace the ruffians with a more professional protection agency. Dr. Serijo's investigations determined that in the region some forty percent of the buildings were directly owned by one Redmund Erhart who seemed to seem immune to the predations of the Wolves, although their rents are high. Taking into account calculations, Lady Alice Drachenheim believed that a new counter-association to the Wolves could be established. Offiziere Alex Maximillian went through the city and found a number of members of the old Kompanie seeking further employment, including a freiter and nine soldat. In uniforms and with professoinal conduct before long some 27 households had joined the new Drachenheim Civil Improvement Association, whose fees varied on the size of the house, but would average around 8 guidlers per month for the larger multi-family houses common in the region. With a monthly income of 216 guilders per month, and a protection wages expense of 47 per month (8 guilders per freiter, 4 guilders per soldat), significant money was available for civil works. Lady Alice Drachenheim also received an invitation to her and her entourage to attend a ball by Eisenfurst Nicklaus Trague. This was an extroardinary honour and opportunity to meet some of the major figures of the city. This included the chief advisor, Wilma Probst; the stern head of the Explorer's Guild, Madeline du Bisset; and the wealthy banker and landlord, Redmund Erhart. A party game ensures of finding and smuggling a fox-tail; Dr. Serjio, taking to the library meets an inebriated and philosophical Lord Trague, and suggests that he may wish to introduce extra stamp duty to pay for better militia protection for "their spiritual wealth". Meanwhile, Lord Bryon rapidly becomes close friends with the aspiring Vodacce sculptor Christina Bianco, who moves in with Bryon. In addition Bryon purchases 40 guilders of white marble for his guest Christina, the first project being a bust of himself. The enforcers of the Mad Wolves have been systemically prevented by the soldiers of the CIA, and although surly groups are still abound, crime has significantly decreased in the district. However, when a gang of twelve beat up on a pair of Improvement Association guards, Lady Drachenheim goes in disguise as a street urchin, taking young Hans as a guide, and paying him 12 guilders rewared - a princely sum! - after discovering their ganghouse, an abandoned carriage house in a neighbouring district. Lady Drachenheim, in disguise, becomes friends with one of the guards on shift, named Ahlf, who seems to be interested in being more than friends. As strange as it seems, Lady Drachenheim also has feeling stir for the handsome ruffian as well. Meanwhile there is a major issue with one the residence of Alberto Constanzo, a trader (by invitation only) of antiquities. Not for some time, there has been strange sounds and lights coming from his large mansion, and locals are talking about ghosts. The party breaks in, for the good of the community, and begins to explore the massive home, finding many wondrous items and indeed even magical artifacts, including flashing bookends, an anti-weight bung, and a music box which invokes memory. Finally however they find the items of their main concern; in the study is a contraption on a desk which fire bolts of lightning a short distance. The burned outline on the ground next to it suggesting the final fate of Alberto. After fishing for books in the room, in the most literal sense, the strange language requires translation. They take it to Madeline du Bisset, head of the Explorer's Guild, who translates that the contraption turns off when in darkness; she also insists that it be passed on to the Guild for safekeeping - the other items can remain with Dr. Serijo, who is granted Guild membership. After blocking out any possibility of light getting in the room the contraption is bagged, and the bag bagged, and given up to the Guild. Providing Aulf a gift of a carved wolf, Aulf reciprocates with a pair of shoes. But what Aulf does not know is the wolf carving has been blooded by the sorcery of the Montaigne. Through the sorcery of Porte, Lady Alice Drachenheim places twenty pounds of gunpowder, recently acquired, into the Mad Wolf headquarters whilst distracting Aulf from the massive explosion. Homeless and unemployed Aulf recounts his sorrowful tale to Lady Alice, of how he was the son of a farmer whose family was killed during the War of the Cross. Overcome with remorse, Lady Alice ensures his employment outside of the city walls, and reveals her gender to him with the cover that she had done so because streetlife is particularly dangerous for a young woman. Aulf is unpeterbed and continues to express his affections. Later, Dr. Serijo is contacted by one Ernst Bottenfeld who has heard of his meeting with senior individuals of the city, and indeed of the investigations into the home of Professor Alberto Constanzo. The specialist in optics writes of a great new invention and wants the good doctor to view it. When Dr. Serijo visits however the home has been ransacked, and a cross drawn in blood is on the wall, along with a religious inscription, along with the very dead professsor, with crude slashings across his body. All initially points to an act of the Inquisition, known for their disapproval of certain scientific investigations, but the destruction - and message - lack the clinical and subtle approach of their work. The great investion is missing, but indentations in the floor indicate its prior (and heavy) presence. Noting loose floorboards, the party venture down into the sewers, noting continuing drag marks. Eventually they enter into a cellar of a disused building, with the stairs full of rubble. The contraption of pulleys and mirrors is at the far end. Officer Maxmillian is attacked by a strange cloak-like creature, coloured as the darkest pitch. Desparetly the party attempts to destroy the creature that slowly envelopes their officer and all looks grim, until Dr. Serijo places the latern into the machine and operates to cause the room to become emblazoned in light. The creature writhes and cries, and eventually expires. Calculating their steps, it is discovered the disused building is part of the orphanage grounds; Lord Bryon pays the orphanage fifty guilders for opportunity to retrieve the machine, which is kept in the care of Dr. Serijo. Although he seems very interested in the demon's corpse as well.
